Course Overview
This is a one-semester production class in which advanced drama students integrate skills they have learned in previous classes to perform and help produce a mainstage production. You will also get practical information about the field of professional theatre and film, and opportunities to strengthen your skills as a theatre artist through special programs sponsored by our community arts partners, such as the August Wilson Monologue Competition and the TCG Ambassador program and workshops.
We will go on a field trip to see August Wilson's Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and hopefully Arthur Miller's A View from the Bridge. GREAT plays! You must write a critique of the play we attend.
PERFORMANCE DATES and OPPORTUNITIES:
Halloween Orchestra/Choir/Drama Assembly OCTOBER 31. "Family Matters" sketch from Everything I Know About Life I learned form Being a Zombie.
Mainstage show NOVEMBER 9-10. Under consideration: Mass Transit by Evangelina Ordaz (curtain raiser), Real Women Have Curves by Josefina Lopez, Black Butterfly Jaguar Girl by Luis Alfaro. Over the next 2 weeks we will read scripts, cast and make any necessary edits. Rehearsals begin first week of September. Creative casting is necessary to give students the opportunity to perform. If you do not wish to act, but only to Stage Manage, let me know immediately.
Rehearsals:
After school 1 day a week 3:15-5:00. You need to attend 3 of these before November 3.
Tuesdays w/ some flexibility.
Tech Rehearsal: Thurs November 3 during class time, with line through in G208 after school.
Friday November 4, Monday Nov 7 from 3:15-6, Tuesday Nov 8 from 3:15-6:30 pm
August Wilson Monologue Competition. Citywide is Mid-November, date TBD. Do it!
We always have students progress to regionals.
ELAPA Middle School Tour - mid October - this year we need to represent.
DTASC Competition - Sat Oct 22 - dependent on location and our ELAPA production schedule.
Spring Shakespeare production: March 30 - Huntington, April 6-7 ELAPA. Due to earlier performance date, we may begin reading through the selected play ad casting in late November. Under consideration: HAMLET, ROMEO & JULIET and MUCH ADO ABOUT NOTHING.
FALL SHOW PRODUCTION TEAM SUPPORT:
Each actor will also support the show in one of these areas:
Stage Management - contact lists, rehearsal calls, notate blocking, copying) can be shared by 2
Assistant Directing/Editing - will work closely with me during auditions and rehearsals
Publicity & Audience Development posters, flyers, pre-show activity to enroll ELAPA students)
Props - works with me and Mr. Guzman's crew to make sure we have list and gather or build
Costume - measurements,, helps gather, organize and tag by character
Sound - supports Tech Crew with list and selection of recorded or live musical/sound elements
Front of House - recruits evening ushers, coordinate purchase & selling of refreshments.
BEHAVIOR EXPECTATIONS
1. Phones & earbuds are put away out of sight. If seen, they go in my desk. For reals.
2. Respect peers, yourself, and me. Risk-taking demands a SAFE space!
No talking while others perform, no gossip, one speaker at a time
3. Respect your space: no gum, food or beverages other than water.
4. Be on time: tardy unexcused 2 times > call home, 3 times > U on report card.
5. No restroom passes first or last 15 minutes of the period
